REAL Oshkosh is committed to Racial Equity Advocacy and Leadership in Oshkosh, with an initial focus on our students and our schools. We are a community of advocates and leaders pushing for substantive changes in Oshkosh to increase racial equity.

REAL Oshkosh grew out of dialogue among members of the Oshkosh Parents of Black/Brown Students and seeks to amplify these parents’ calls for action in Oshkosh.

REAL Oshkosh September Meeting

Event Name: Race and Oshkosh Public Schools: Community Conversations
Date: Sunday, Sept 24, 2023
Time: 3:00-5:00 PM
Place: Vel Phillips Middle School, Community Room (1401 Kentucky St), ENTER AT DOOR #4

This conversation is for parents of Black/Brown students in Oshkosh’s public schools and for those who want to learn more about the racial crisis in our schools and advocate for urgent action.

At our September meeting, we will review additional disciplinary data from the district, identify priorities for the upcoming school year. We will also be joined by several district officials in an effort to build more productive relationships. We will also provide some supervision in the gym so feel free to bring your kids along!

The gathering is an outgrowth of Parents of Black and Brown Students in Oshkosh Schools and REAL Oshkosh (Racial Equity, Advocacy, and Leadership in Oshkosh). Parents of Black and Brown Students in Oshkosh Schools is a private Facebook group that was created by parents for parents who believe we need to unite and advocate for our Black and brown children in Oshkosh’s public schools.

Oshkosh Area School District Listening Sessions

We have found this to be a more effective use of our energy than 2-minute speeches at the public meeting (though those also have an impact). Listening sessions take place prior to school board meetings in a non-televised, conversational environment that includes some members of the Board of Education and the district’s Executive Team. All listening sessions begin at 5pm.

Upcoming Listening Sessions:

  • August 9th at 5pm
